Weaver No-Gunsmith Converta Shotgun Mount -- Lessons Learned!
I had never disassembled the Remington 870, so I really didn't know what I was getting myself in for. Since the mount was sold as a "No-Gunsmith" product, I figured it couldn't be all that hard. Opening the package revealed the mount, two allen bolts of different diameters, two hex head nuts matching the diameters of the bolts, four thin plastic washers, two allen wrenches and one tiny set screw. The only thing missing were instructions -- oh, well.I slipped the mount onto the receiver of my Remington 870 for a test-fit and confirmed that the holes lined up perfectly. The mount fit VERY snugly on my receiver, so it isn't clear why the four washers had been included. One side of the mount has a round recess for the allen bolt heads. The other side of the mount has a hexagonal recess for the hex head nuts, so it works like a carriage bolt.I checked out the receiver very carefully to try to determine how the disassembly process worked and came to the realization that the only thing holding the trigger assembly in the receiver were two pressure-fit pins -- not bolts or screws. Using a nail punch, I was able to coax the pins out of the receiver without much trouble. When the pins were completely removed, however, the trigger assembly SHIFTED and I could see by looking through the pin holes in the receiver that a part of the trigger assembly had shifted to block the hole. This really had me concerned and I realized that I could have done this differently to keep the trigger assembly from moving around and possibly requiring a trip to the gunsmith for a "No-Gunsmith" aftermarket part. [After some fiddling, I *was* able to re-align the trigger assembly inside the receiver and get the allen head bolts through the receiver and holding the trigger assembly in place properly.]So... What would I have done differently? Well, instead of removing the pins and THEN attempting to install the Weaver No-Gunsmith Converta Shotgun Mount, I would have done it by the following steps:1) Slip the mount onto the receiver of the shotgun, aligning the mount holes with the pins holding the trigger assembly in place.2) Use a nail punch and hammer to gently hammer out ONE of the pins.3) Insert the allen head bolt through the receiver & trigger assembly and insert the hex head nut on the other side, tighten just enough to make snug. The small diameter bolt goes in the front (small) hole. The large diameter bolt goes in the rear (large) hole.4) Use a nail punch and hammer to gently hammer out THE OTHER pin.5) Insert the allen head bolt through the receiver & trigger assembly and insert the hex head nut on the other side, tighten just enough to make snug. This ought to work better. I hope this will help you keep from making the same mistake that I made.

This is my first scope, and I mounted it on a 20 gauge Remington 870 Shotgun.

Very fast install. Mount went on in under 5 minutes - trickiest part was figuring out how to push the original pins out of the receiver. (Ice pick worked quite well, with a good rap on it's handle from a tack hammer to get them started.) Everything else I needed, including the allen wrenches, was included in the package.

Even though the mount LOOKS like a snug fit on the 20 guage without them, I was assured by someone with experience installing this mount on this model gun that you MUST use all 4 washers, to assure a proper fit. It's kinda tricky getting them properly positioned over the pin holes, between the mount and the receiver, but the allen wrenches made it easier, once I understood what I needed to do. The ice pick woud have worked too.

Be careful to change the back rod first, and attach the nut loosely, then remove and replace the front one. Otherwise, the trigger mechanism could fall out of the receiver, and you will have to fiddle with it, to get everything back together correctly. It's easy, really, if you just do them one at a time, back one first. Once they are both changed, cinch them down until snug. Be careful not to over-tighten the bolts - if you do, you will experience stiffness, or outright jamming of the pump action and / or trigger. That's not a failing of the mount - that's just because of how the gun is designed to come apart for service. Check them after sighting in the gun, to make sure they are not loose, and again after a day afield.

The mount is NOT made of metal - rather, it is made of some very light weight "composite" material. (Is that a catch-phrase for "plastic"?) There were no instructions, and so I am still not sure what the set screw on the top of the mount is supposed to do, or how tight it is supposed to be, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't serve any mission-critical purpose. I suppose I'll ask my fellow hunters, if I have trouble getting / keeping the scope sighted. (Since they sell this same mount for other guns, it may be that it serves a function on one of those. Again, directions would have been nice...) The mount seems to have some structural flexibility, which might actually be a good thing - better to have it spring back to position, than to be bent, if the gun is dropped.

The scope rings cinched down tight as you could please - I am confident that there will be no issues with everything staying attached correctly, as there is no slop or looseness to be discerned.

I believe this part is manufactured in an "injection moulding" process. If that's true, then I give Weaver credit for careful cleaning and removal of "flash" - they were no dangling chads, or sharp edges anywhere on it.

I'm taking it to the range tomorrow to sight in my scope - if I learn anything more, I will update this reveiw.

EDIT: (10 months since I made this reveiw.) I made my first kill (with the scope mounted) - at 40 yards, it was almost like reaching out and touching the deer. I'll be buying a couple more of these for my other gun, and my daughter's gun, when we get ready to mount scopes - great product, and silly easy to install. It took me quite a few shots to get the gun sighted - but it was my first time sighting in a scope. I am convinced it was my lack of experience, and not any problem with equipment that caused the difficulty. Since that time, I have sighted in a scope on a crossbow, and that went much quicker.
I believe it was because I had some experience behind me, that allowed me to get on point faster.

I received the saddle mount picatinny rail for Remington 870 Express today. It took me less than 10 minutes to install. A suggestion for easy install... put in the front pin first without the retaining nut, then as you insert the rear pin which is larger in diameter, grasp the trigger guard in one hand and slowly press it up into position while inserting the second pin. I did this and it went right into place. Then attach the nuts on each pin, then tighten adequately but do not over tighten. Then insert the pin in the top of the rail being careful not to over tighten. It looks great, is really stable for my red dot scope. I am very pleased!

Light weight and durable composite design, no metal to metal like an aluminum mount. Attaches easily and is snug so it is very stable. Comes with simple to follow instructions, took about 3 minutes to mount it. It also is not bad cosmetically, it looks like part of the gun. I was worried that it wouldn't match the gloss bluing of the receiver but it does very well. I'd recommend it. I was sceptical after reading some of the reviews but I had no problems. The cut-outs for the nuts fit perfect with no extra room to allow for the nuts to turn once in their recess. From what I could tell installing mine, you would have to really be cranking to strip these nuts. I had zero problems, they went right in and snugged right up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect fit for my 11-87
Reviewed in Canada on November 25, 2023
After reading some reviews about it not working for my 12 gauge 11-87 I still decided to give it a shot. I have an after market charging handle that is a lot bigger however I seen a video on using a dremal tool to remove material to get it to work. Once I got the clearance for the bolt handle I lined it up and the screws fit the pin holes perfectly I used blue lock tight and only tightened enough so the bolt returned perfectly under the spring. Over tightening the screws will squeeze the receiver and prevent the bolt from functioning properly. I brought the back screw pretty tight then the front screw, I kept tightening until I felt the bolt starting to be restricted then just backed the screw off a little and the bolt moved freely. I found using low profile rings was the best option. I still feel the scope sits high for the factory stock so I added a cheek riser and it’s very comfortable to shoot.
