Customers are mixed about the sturdiness of the lap desk. Some mention it's stable and perfect size for a laptop, while others say it'll wobble and be unstable. The pneumatic mechanism does not appear to be strong enough to resist the weight of the laptop. The fake wood laminate is disappointing considering the $115 price tag.

Solidly build, but has some wobble issues
I am typing this review right now on the Balt adjustable mobile laptop stand. I was pretty excited when it arrived. The box says that this is the BLT-47262 model, and made in Taiwan. The manufacturer is Mooreco and they're located in Texas. The stand I received is from the Sep 2012 batch.I agree with Christi (her glowing review played no small part in my purchase decision) that the mahogany laminate top is by no means cheap looking and I actually like it. Generally, the materials are sturdy and all the parts appear solid. Nothing flimsy which looks like it might break. Now to the bad news. This may or may not be a deal breaker. Gonsoulin is absolutely right that there is a wobble of about 1/2 inches. The wobble is in the horizontal axis. Meaning that the top does not wobble up and down but rather if you rest your arms on it and move your arms, it will rotate about 1/2 inches as if you were swivelling the top.I looked at the entire mechanism for 10 minutes and I can't think of a DIY fix. But I did manage to identify the problem. The shaft which is used to allow the top to lower up and down has a "hexagonal" like design (there are actually more than 6 points). If you've used a painting pole like the Wooster Sherlock, you'll know that's a great idea as compared to a cylindrical pole, because if the "collar" is hexangonal also, there will be absolutely no play. Now Balt got this right, BUT its bottom collar does not match the "hexagonal" shape perfectly.. I have no idea why they chose a weird design, whereby the part of the collar that matches the "tip" of the "hexagon" is slightly rounded. This allows the top to wobble in the horizontal axis. This is design flaw that is SIMPLE to remedy. The fact that the top collar which attaches to the mahogany top is perfectly machined to fit the "hexagonal" shaft says that it's possible. It's such a huge PITY because unlike most of the cheaper stands I would think, the wobble is not because of flimsy materials but a design flaw. The second issue is more problematic. The pneumatic mechanism does not appear to be strong enough to resist the weight of my arms when I lean on the top slightly, say when I'm reading on my laptop. It depersses about 1 inch. If you let go of it, it'll rise back up again. This is very annoying for me. If a hand tightening lever or something is needed to supplement the pneumatic mechanism, then Balt should put it in, or use a stronger penumatic mechanism. So here goes my mixed review. I wished the 2 problems didn't exist, and I could be as happy with the desk as I was excited to receive it.If anyone has any DIY workaround suggestions, do let me know.I've also posted an number of photos to show the unpacking, and a closeup of the collar that was not machined to fit the shaft exactly.Update - I've contacted MooreCo about the 2 issues. They've acknowledged it, but gave a rather non-commital reply that they're "considering" a different mechanism:"Our Engineering and R&D departments are also considering the pneumatic issue that you brought up - potentially including a different type of locking mechanism on the height."I guess that means too bad for me, I've to live with the wobble and the sinking.

I have been using this mobile desk for 8-12 hours per day for one full month now. I absolutely love it, so I figured it was time to write a review that might help someone else who's in the market for this type of product.

After combing through numerous reviews of mobile laptop desks/workstations, it seemed there was a lot of dissatisfaction with most models I saw on Amazon. The complaints are myriad; most have to do with poor adjustability, lack of stability, wobbling, shoddy quality, etc. All of these units were well under $100. With most things in life, you get what you pay for, and I figure laptop desks are no exception. I don't know what one would expect for $60.

I work at home. Because I needed a laptop workstation that is mobile, adjustable, stable and comfortable (I work for hours at a time), I really couldn't afford to waste my time and throw away $45-$80 on a piece of junk that would need to be replaced in 2 months or less. Though there were no Amazon reviews of this promising-looking desk, I was able to find 4 excellent reviews of this workstation on another site, though I purchased here. This unit costs more than most out there (except the fifteen hundred dollar Steelcase Airtouch) but after using this workstation, I can honestly say this item is totally worth its price and I would not hesitate to purchase another. My husband actually wants one now.

It was extremely easy to assemble and the instructions are very clear. The only error in the instructions is the direction to tighten screws using an Allen wrench. This is incorrect--a Phillips head screwdriver is what is actually needed.

The instructions suggest checking the screws at least once every 6 months and tightening if necessary. I view as a positive sign that the manufacturer (Balt) speaks about maintaining the unit in the long-term: this suggests that they actually expect it to last.

About the unit:
- It does NOT wobble--it's very stable.
- The pneumatic height adjustment lever works well, though when lowering the desktop, I need to push the desktop down with some force. The height is infinitely adjustable within its range of 21.25" - 31.25".
- The top spins 360 degrees in both directions, but it doesn't spin loosely; it would only spin if one actually intended for it to spin.
- The wheels work smoothly even on carpet and feature two locking casters.
- The wheels and base easily slide under the frame of my bed, though this is not usually where I work. I can also use it sitting on my couch, though I suppose YMMV depending on the build of your couch.
- The top surface easily supports my 15.3" laptop with inches of space left on both sides. Therefore it would support a much larger laptop as well. The top is 15.25" deep and 25.75" wide.

There are two finish options on this unit: Mahogany Wood Laminate, and black. I meant to order the black but I accidentally ordered the mahogany. I was afraid the mahogany laminate would look cheap, because wood laminate often does look cheap, in my experience. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it looks quite nice and not at all cheap. The desktop features a gently curved beveled rounded edge. This desk looks classy.

The only thing that I wish were different: I wish it adjusted a little taller so it would be easier for a taller person to use when standing. If the height could be raised up to 36 or even 40 inches, it would be even better. Still, for the money, you can't beat this unit.

Get this, you won't regret it!

I waited several months to review this to make sure it was going to hold up well and be worth the cost. Laptop stands are notoriously wobbly, unstable and poorly built. I paid more hoping to get better quality and I'd say this time I did. This gets moved from room to room and always has at least a laptop on it. It's held up very well. The surface size is larger than others I looked at too, which is nice because there's room for a mousepad beside the laptop.

I bought one of these stands about month before I bought the other one. The first one is fantastic and works very well. The second one is not very good. The top wriggles a lot which for some reason there is too much play in the main shaft. The first table does not have this problem.

The fake wood laminate is disappointing considering the $115 price tag. This isn't a deal breaker though, as the pattern of the laminate does resemble real wood from a distance. There was a tiny bubble in the laminate of my unit, but it's not noticeable enough to warrant a return. There is some noticeable wiggle, as other reviewers have stated, but this product does seem sturdier than it's cheaper alternatives.

I'm not sure how the laminate will hold up over time, but at least the design allows the owner to replace the top with a higher quality piece of wood from Home Depot.
